Problem by Liz: Does “first printed” mean that the book is a first edition?

I bought a book recently and on the inside it says “first print” above a printing line that says “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1″. I had heard that if you see a 1 in that line that the book is a first edition.


So I guess my question is 1) Whats the difference between first print and first edition, and 2) Do I have a first edition book on my hands?

Well, you have the first printing of some edition, but I don’t know that it’s a first edition. If it doesn’t say “second/third/whatever edition,” though, it may well be.


The difference between editions is usually that the book has been revised, had some typos fixed, had some preface or epilogue added, etc. — there’s a significant difference in the text. Within each edition there may be multiple printings; that just means that they printed 1,000 copies, then sold them all, then decided they could probably sell some more, so then did a second printing of another 5,000 copies, etc., without changing a single letter of the text.
