Uncertainty from carleenmarcorelle: What is the best product to clean wood floors?

My landlord thinks the floors are hardwood, however, I saw some extra pieces in the garage, and it appears to be the fit-together laminate wood type of floor, although it is a dark color and looks as nice as many hardwood floors. I used Swiffer wet mop, but it doesn’t seem to take out the “smudges” from the floor–it’s clean, but you can still tell where the heavy traffic area is because of the paw “prints” and shoe “prints”. I do have a steam cleaner, but will that damage the floor because of moisture?

A steam cleaner with a microfiber cloth on the end id the BEST. However, I have found that the Bona line of hardwood floor cleaning products have been working wonderfully on my new (old) heart pine Floors. We live on a farm, so dog prints, shoe prints and the occasional manure track is common in my house. A Mr. Clean pop-up disinfectant cloth works just fine with no bad results on tough stuff before I use the Bona. I can then cut back my steam cleaning to once or twice a month. (depending on the season.)

You can get fit-together hardwood floors. If this is what you have then the wood will be sealed so you can use an ordinary floor cleaner with a mop and bucket. (Don’t let it get too wet – wring out the mop well). Or use one of those mops you put a throw away cloth over. Get a washing up sponge to give an extra rub to those areas that need it. Dark wood sealed floors are notoriously difficult to clean.

I use a swifter mop with a rag on there, and Murphy’s oil soap that works great. I have tried everything else on my floor I was tried of the streaks and not getting it clean.

Murphys oil soap

Supermarket

I use the shark steam mop.

Answer by Sword Lily

I use a mix of white vinegar and warm water.

If you decide to use Murphy’s soap get the soap for floors not the regular Murphy’s Oil Soap. The regular makes floors slick.

The Swiffer wet mop liquid leaves residue behind. I’m sure that’s what’s causing the “paw prints” you’re seeing.

Try switching to a microfiber mop and using a vinegar and water solution instead. You can mix in the vinegar and water in any ratio you like.

Don’t over-saturate the mop. You want a good wet mop, but not dripping.

You can buy microfiber mops just about anywhere…hardware stores, Home Depot, Walmart, Kmart, and even Dollar General.

I think this will cure your problem.

Good luck.
